Scuba Skills & Sights: Butler Beach Dive with Ray Chaters

I took Shrunga out for a scuba diving adventure off Butler Beach in Florida this June. We met up at 7:30 am in Florida Florida, ready to explore the underwater world. The day started with partly cloudy skies, and we knew there was a chance of rain later on. As we geared up and went through our pre-dive checks, I could feel the excitement building for what lay beneath the surface. As a guide with Ray Chaters, I always aim to provide a safe and unforgettable underwater adventure for my crew. Florida's Gulf Coast flats offer excellent sight fishing for redfish and speckled trout. Key to success is locating potholes in seagrass beds during low tide and targeting them as the water rises. Tarpon migrate along beaches in late spring, with early morning topwater plugs effective near passes. Offshore, kingfish and cobia congregate around artificial reefs and wrecks in 50-100 ft depths, responding well to slow-trolled live baits.

Once underwater, we focused on key scuba techniques like buoyancy control and drift diving. These skills are crucial for navigating Butler Beach's diverse underwater landscape. We also practiced safety stops, ensuring a responsible ascent. While our main focus was on diving techniques, we kept an eye out for marine life. Butler Beach is known for its rich ecosystem, perfectly suited for scuba exploration.
