Reel in Mahi and Grunters on Florida's Coastal Flats!

I headed out with Shrunga and their crew for an early morning fishing adventure on June 1st. We launched from Butler Beach at 6:00 am, greeted by partly cloudy skies with the possibility of storms later in the day. The water conditions at Butler Beach were favorable for our target species. As we set out, I briefed the crew on our plan for the day's Inshore Fishing Adventure in Gulf Shores. With my experience as a guide for Ray Chaters, I was confident we'd find some action in the waters off Florida's coast. Florida's coastal flats offer excellent sight fishing for redfish and snook around mangrove islands and oyster bars during high tides. In deeper channels, drifting live shrimp or pinfish near bridge pilings can produce catches of grouper and snapper. Offshore reefs hold amberjack and cobia, best targeted with vertical jigging techniques in 80-120 feet of water. Tarpon migrate along beaches in late spring, where slow-trolling mullet or crabs near passes can be effective.

Given the conditions, we employed a variety of techniques including bait casting, trolling, and flipping and pitching. Our efforts paid off when we hooked into some Mahi Mahi, also known as Common Dolphinfish. The highlight of our catches was a respectable 14-inch Mahi Mahi. We also managed to land a few Sooty grunters. These species are well-suited for the diverse habitats found in Florida's coastal waters, from inshore flats to offshore structures.
